High-energy visible light (HEV) spans the violet and deep-blue end of the spectrum. Two effects operate in two distinct bands: blue light around 460–480 nm is the peak of the melanopsin-driven melatonin-suppression action spectrum, the mechanism by which screens degrade sleep architecture; violet light around 380–420 nm is the peak of retinal-pigment-epithelium damage and photoreceptor loss. Both penetrate deeper than UV. A separate frequency effect — LED pulse-width-modulation flicker, where it falls in the theta or alpha bands — can entrain brainwaves toward drowsiness or disrupt sustained attention. Together these suppress the body’s overnight oxidative-stress repair cycle — the pathway that would otherwise neutralise damage from the other vectors.
